The problem
Two creators, same brand. One is chasing her hook number. The other is rewriting his CTA. Each thinks the other is working on the wrong end of the video. Where you fix a leak changes how much it helps, and this trips people up, so it is worth spelling out.
The top touches the most people. Every single viewer sees your hook. Lift your 2s view from 30% to 40% and one-third more people enter the rest of your funnel. Every step below gets more people, for free. That is why old funnel people said the biggest leverage is at the front. More clicks on the ad means more people ever see the offer.
The bottom is closest to money. Fewer people reach it, but each one is worth more. Someone who watched to the end and tapped the product is almost a buyer. Fixing a leak at Click or Convert turns almost buyers into buyers. Nothing above it can do that.
So which do you fix first? The same answer as Lesson 16: the biggest leak. But knowing the two ends helps you read what you find.
| Leak at | What it means | Where to look |
|---|---|---|
| Hook, Payoff | The video is losing people before it has said anything. | The first three seconds. Nothing below matters until this works. |
| Body, Finish | They were interested and lost interest. Something in the script sagged. | Find the second where they left. |
| Click, Convert | They liked the video and didn't buy. It may not be the video. | The product page, the price, reviews, and whether the brand's ad spend dropped. |
The example
A cleanser video with nothing wrong above the fold.
The strategist checks the product. The price went up two weeks ago, the top review is a one-star, and the brand paused its ads. None of that is in the script. Rewriting the CTA would not have moved it.
A video with a strong hook, strong Payoff, strong body, and a weak Convert is a reusable video. Point it at a product that is actually moving.
Do this in Verdict
- 1Open the Leak Finder and find the marked step. Note which end of the funnel it is on.
- 2A leak at Hook or Payoff: fix the opening before anything else. Every step below inherits the gain.
- 3A leak at Convert on an otherwise clean funnel: check the product before the script. Lesson 14 walks through the product-page checks, and the video itself belongs in the Element Library for the next product.
The one exception to “top first” is a video that already clears the money bar. Lesson 15 covers why you leave a weak hook alone when the video is selling anyway.
